August 25, 2024, was a night to remember for music fans in Columbus as Sugar Ray, Tonic, and Lit took the stage at Columbus Commons for an unforgettable throwback concert. As part of the Common Ground Concert Series—a fantastic collaboration between Downtown Columbus, Inc. and CAPA—this free event was a perfect blend of nostalgia and rock ‘n’ roll energy.
A Throwback Extravaganza
As the summer sun dipped below the horizon of buildings and apartments that frame the six-acre park, fans of all ages streamed into Columbus Commons, eager to relive the golden era of the late ’90s and early 2000s. The scene was a vibrant mix of families, long-time fans, casual onlookers, and people of all ages, creating a lively and diverse atmosphere.

Many attendees brought chairs and coolers to relax and enjoy the night, while others preferred to stand and soak up the music. With all tickets being general admission, everyone had the freedom to choose their own spot and make the most of the evening.

LIT Brings The Energy
First to hit the stage was Lit, whose high-octane performance was the perfect finale to a stellar night. Known for their anthems like “My Own Worst Enemy” and “Miserable,” Lit rocked the stage with a setlist that had everyone on their feet. The band’s dynamic stage presence and infectious energy made it clear why they’ve remained a fan favorite over the years and set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Tonic Takes the Stage
Next, Tonic brought their signature rock sound to the Commons. With powerful renditions of “If You Could Only See” and “Open Up Your Eyes,” the band proved why they were one of the standout acts of the late ’90s.
One of our favorite parts was near the end of their set when they brought out the ASL interpreter and did an acoustic rendition of their amazing hit “If You Could Only See.”
Sugar Ray Lights Up the Night
Closing out the evening was Sugar Ray, the band known for their catchy hooks and feel-good vibes. Fronted by the charismatic Mark McGrath, Sugar Ray ended the evening in style belting out popular hits like like “Fly,” “Every Morning,” and “Someday.”
The crowd was singing along, waving their hands in the air, and soaking in the nostalgia.
A Night to Remember
The concert wasn’t just about the music; it was a celebration of shared memories and good times. The ambiance was laid-back yet lively, with concert-goers enjoying food trucks, local vendors, and the communal spirit of the event. The free nature of the concert series made it accessible to all, reinforcing the sense of community and togetherness that Downtown Columbus and CAPA strive to foster.
As the night came to a close and the last notes faded into the cool evening air, it was clear that the August 25 concert was a resounding success. Sugar Ray, Tonic, and Lit delivered a nostalgic journey back to a beloved era, leaving fans with smiles on their faces and music in their hearts.
