Meet Nicole Loy: A Local Author Making Storytime a Little More Magical

If you’ve spent any time in downtown Troy, you probably already know Nicole Loy who once served as the director of Troy Main Street. But what you might not know is that she’s also a children’s book author, turning her lifelong love of storytelling into something magical for local families to enjoy.

Her new picture book series, published through Hurry Back Books, is all about bringing joy, laughter, and connection to storytime. “Picture books are so fun, they’re fun to write and fun to read,” she explains. “I write interactive children’s books because they increase bonding between kids and their adults.”

Her debut title introduces readers to Sir Stud Muffin, a dramatic (and hilarious) feline character that any cat owner will instantly recognize. “He’s not based on a real pet, but anyone who’s ever lived with a cat will recognize his dramatic flair.”

A second book is already in the works, set to release in March. Between now and then, Nicole’s calendar is packed, she has school visits lined up to share her story with young readers. She also teamed up with Katie from Eat Pretty Darling for a fun collaboration where they made muffins.

Nicole’s daughter has been her biggest cheerleader through it all, reviewing drafts, celebrating milestones, and getting a front-row seat to her mom’s creative journey.

As for the artwork, Nicole’s illustrator is based in South Africa, someone she found through trusted recommendations from agents and fellow authors. “We’ve never met in person, but she’s been fully vetted and is incredibly talented,” Nicole says. “Everything is hand-drawn, no AI shortcuts here.”

When asked what message she hopes parents and kids take away, Nicole keeps it simple: “I want my books to remind people to be a good friend, even when someone isn’t at their best. I want families to connect, to have fun reading and laughing together.”

Her books are written for ages 3–7, but the heart behind them is for everyone.

And when it comes to Miami County itself, Nicole couldn’t be more grateful. “This community is so special. People here are supportive, connected, and genuinely want each other to succeed,” she says. “That kind of community spirit is what makes Miami County home.”
